GIS and System Inventories
Fisher Associates’ Digital GPS to GIS Photography provides a unique and cost effective way to map signs, obtain digital photos, provide GPS positioning, and create a GIS layer in one process. This process involves taking a picture of signs and other system elements with a GPS enabled camera. The sign’s GPS coordinates and a time/date stamp are digitally written to the photograph along with embedded field notes. Then, when the photographs are downloaded from the camera, the GPS coordinates are extracted from the photograph and used to automatically create an ESRI ArcGIS shapefile locating each sign. Finally, a “hot link” is established so that when you drag your mouse over each sign location in ArcGIS, the photo of the sign pops up on your screen.
