Little Ausable Recreational Trail

Fisher Associates conducted a Phase IA and IB Cultural Resource investigation for the Village for Peru for the development of a 1.5 mile recreational trail along the Little Ausable River and through the 13 acre Heyworth-Mason Park and Heyworth-Mason Mill, funded under a FHWA TEP grant and a ORPHP NYS Park Development grant.. The Heyworth-Mason Mill (c. 1836-1972) complex is National-Register eligible and the archaeological assessment identified almost 60 map or photo-documented structures in the project area. Approximately twenty of these were documented through Phase IB excavations. Phase IB investigations were combined with the use of Phase II test units to provide enough information for a National Register eligibility determination. Based on this information Fisher was able to propose trail design alternatives to mitigate impacts to NR-eligible archaeological deposits. Adoption of these alternatives and the expanded format of the Phase I investigations enable the Village of Peru to receive a No-Adverse-Effect determination without additional phases of investigation or mitigation.
