County Route 73 Bridge over Tioga River
The proximity of a railroad crossing to the east of the bridge, a non-standard grade break in the profile at the west end, an adjacent USGS gage, a highway curve at the east approach, and a house at the southeast quadrant of the bridge all limited the options we faced in the replacement and realignment of this bridge over the Tioga River.
In addition to resolving alignment issues, Fisher Associates conducted an intensive hydraulic evaluation of new structure and it impacts on the flow of the Tioga River, delineated wetlands and obtained permits to facilitate construction of the pier located within the river, coordinated with SHPO, the NYSDEC, and the U.S. Corps of Engineers, and oversaw the ROW acquisition process.
Our design solution was a two-span multi-stringer steel superstructure on new concrete abutments and pier, realignment of 800 ft. of road, and intersection reconfiguration. The new bridge is a 220 ft long two span, curved and haunched steel multi-girder superstructure, supported on a reinforced concrete pier in the river and new reinforced concrete abutments that are founded on 70 to 80 ft long steel bearing piles to bedrock. The design of the entire bridge was to the newly adopted LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design) Specifications.
