Calkins Road - Middle Road Improvement

The Calkins Road/Middle Road intersection was experiencing excessive delay for those attempting to exit Middle Road onto Calkins Road. This delay created unsafe conditions as drivers were accepting less than desirable gaps in traffic causing many near-miss accidents. To solve this problem, a new traffic signal was installed at the intersection. Two unique challenges of the signal were the accommodation of the at-grade rail crossing immediately east of the intersection and emergency service pre-empt for the Henrietta Ambulance Services across from Middle Road. In addition to the new traffic signal, we widened Calkins Road from the existing four-lane section to a five-lane section to provide exclusive left-turn lanes at Calkins/Hylan and Calkins/Middle Roads. Fisher Associates widened the roadway to the north to minimize the impacts to the existing drainage system on the south side of Calkins Road and to avoid any impacts to the Lehigh Trail along the south side of the roadway. Finally, Middle Road was re-aligned to eliminate the existing skew angle of the intersection and to better align with the emergency services across the roadway.
