Keuka Outlet Trail

Fisher Associates conducted a Phase IA and IB Cultural Resource investigation of approximately 1.7 miles of the Keuka Outlet Trail for the Not-for-Profit Friends of the Outlet as part of their program to restore and upgrade the Trail and associated resources in the National Register listed Crook Lake Canal Historic District. This included archaeological investigation at two of the NR-listed mills sites—Seneca Mill (c. 1790-1884) and Foxs Mill (c. 1823-1946), the Fall Brook Railroad line (c. 1884-1981) and the Crooked Lake Canal (c. 1831-1878). Portions of the Crooked Lake Canal, including a segment of the original wooden floor of Canal Lock 17, were identified. Through consultation with the Friends of the Outlet and the NYS SHPO, Phase IB investigations were streamlined to limit disturbance to the National-Register listed sites and provide enough information for a No-Adverse-Effect determination. Fisher Associates designed a mitigation strategy to avoid the intact Canal Lock structures and enable the Friends to meet their objectives of stabilizing and enhancing the Keuka Outlet Trail.
